Meet the Maker
Emily Criswell is an artist living and working in West Seattle, Washington. She was inspired to begin making pottery during the pandemic lockdowns. Having unlocked her true passion, she began working full time as a ceramicist in late 2022 when she purchased a kiln and built a home studio.
Coupe Ceramics was born from Emily's love of traditional majolica earthenware and splatterware, the rich culture of Italian and Greek ceramics, a love of cute foods, little treats, the cosmos and the sea. She enjoys iterating on traditional materials and themes to create modern, durable household goods and finds immense joy in creating multi-functional wares and products that can be used in more than one way.
Emily has explored many different techniques and enjoys using different methods including wheel throwing, hand building, slab work, colored clay/nerikomi, slip casting and 3D design to bring her work to life. You may have met Emily's partner Taylor at a market! He has been instrumental not only in helping with market load-ins, but also with 3D design, woodworking, hauling materials and building an efficient studio space.
Currently, she is most inspired by organic modern forms and in her new work she creates elements of organic movement in traditional forms as well as whimsical surface decoration including splatters and hand painted elements.
The magic of Coupe - nestled among the evergreen trees and just a few blocks from the rocky shores of the puget sound in the North Admiral neighborhood of West Seattle - is not just a workspace, but a sanctuary where passion, imagination, and craftsmanship intertwine. Join us on this journey of creating functional art that adds a bit magic to everyday moments.
SUSTAINABILITY
Pottery is a slow process. With this in mind, we embrace a mindset that values slowing down, breathing deeply and appreciating the individual character of handmade art.
By choosing slow pottery, you're supporting the artisan craft and celebrating the beauty of imperfections. Coupe has a strong commitment to sustainability and uses a closed loop water system in production, creates very little waste and sources secondhand packing materials. From employing eco-friendly reclaim and shipping techniques and utilizing energy-efficient kilns and firing schedules, we strive to minimize our environmental impact.
MAKERS MARK
Coupe Ceramics takes immense pride in the craftsmanship and handmade nature of each and every piece created in the studio. That's why each piece is hand signed, adding a touch of authenticity and a personal connection between the artist and the collector. The signature is like the thumbprint of the artist. Every piece is created lovingly with so much passion, dedication and artistry. And the signature, which is added during the final part of the greenware process, is an extension of the satisfaction and joy derived from the production of the piece. We sincerely hope that each hand-signed piece from Coupe becomes a cherished part of your story.
