For porcelain and stoneware dishes:
Dishwasher okay; hand washing recommended for longevity.
Best practice: hand washing with hot water and liquid dish soap and drying with a soft towel.
If they end up in the dishwasher occasionally - for whatever reason - that's entirely okay! The odds are on our side.
Each of our dishes are made with a high quality stoneware or porcelain and extensively tested glazes that are fired to vitrification at over 2100° F. They have withstood thermal expansion and that integrity remains.
Dishwashing is hard on your dishes - but not in the way you might think. Withstanding such hot water introduces a small risk of thermal shock, which can result in crazing and/or cracking if heat is applied unevenly to a ceramic piece. but more commonly it's in the loading, unloading or mis-loading that pieces crack, break or chip.
For earthenware or pieces with a special effects glaze:
Hand wash with hot water and liquid dish soap, dry with a soft towel.
Although earthenware has been used for cooking and eating vessels for millenia, by its nature, earthenware (low fire clay) is porous. Bacteria growth and leaching may occur. Submerging these pieces in water for any length of time is not recommended.
For raku or non-functional pieces
Spot clean only with a barely damp cloth.
Due to fragile elements, it's better not to wash these! Normal washing/scrubbing may result in the glaze flaking off. Slight changes in colors over time are expected with this style. These pieces are the most delicate of what we make and are not considered dishwasher safe.
